Heartworms

Along with the warmer weather comes an unwanted pest, the Mosquito.  This little insect is a pain for us humans; however, they could be fatal to your dogs.  Mosquito’s can carry a parasite in their mouth, which can be transmitted to your dog.  If your dogs are not protected, this will lead to heartworms.  Heartworms are a parasitic worm, which can grow from 7”-14” each, and some dogs can have up to 300 of these worm, which usually grow inside of the heart chambers.  It sometimes takes up to 5 years before symptoms will show.  Some symptoms to watch out for include:

-        Soft, Dry, Cough

-        Shortness of Breath

-        Weakness

-        Nervousness

-        Listlessness

-        Loss of Stamina

-        Weight loss

It is recommend that you have your dog tested to see if it has heartworms.  The test itself usually runs $20.00, the six month preventative will run you approximately $20-$75 depending on the size of your dog.  This is a cheap price to pay to protect your dog against suffering from this illness.  However, if your dog does test positive for heartworms, it can still be treated.  However, this treatment will run around $275.
